Toward the end of last week i learned some new adwords tricks and i tested them over the last few days so what i will do now is try and write up some findings and share a few secrets with you. stay tuned.

Well, it seems I am (according to my girlfriend) becoming slightly addicted to Internet Marketing. In particular AdWords. I don’t really have an addictive nature and would usually argue the fact, she has accused me of being addicted to a few other things in the past(all internet/computer related mind you!) however i would probably have to agree with her on this one.

So what do you do if you are addicted to Internet Marketing and how might you tell if you are or not? I guess my girlfriend ticked when i suggested we spend the weekend together… at a conference. That went down well hah! She did stay for a few hours to begin with tho!

AdWords is an especially dangerous addiction to have as it can cost you quite a bit of money, i would almost say this is like a gambling addiction as it is most of the time, especially if you are dealing with affiliate marketing, a bit of a gamble. It’s almost like you have stumbled drunkenly onto the table with the highest stakes and you cant seem to get off.

Some people might check their adwords account every few days, whereas i will be checking it every few minutes to see what is going on. This can be bad as it temps you to tweak your ads and your click budget etc meaning it never really gets a chance to get rolling therefore making it harder to test your campaigns. So a good thing to do is to do a lot of your keyword research before you setup the campaign so you dont waste any time, and are not tempted to change them once you start checking them every 30 seconds!

So i am not entirely sure weather this is something to be too concerned about or not. I mean if you are just starting out then sure it might seem like you are a little bit obsessed but isn’t this the same for almost any hobby or if you are lucky, job?

So  a lot of super affiliates and gurus will show you that they have made millions of dollars a year using AdWords and some affiliate network. They can do this because a lot of the time they have the highest ranking ad. It is very simple to do really, but most of the time they never bother to tell you, why? Because it COSTS A FORTUNE.

They do it by having a ridiculously high budget. Their Max CPC might be set to $10 a click and their daily budget is $10000. Sure this is simple when you have a million dollars in your account ready to go into advertising but for the average Joe just starting out it is not usually something you can afford.

Hardly ever (unless you really bug them) will a super affiliate will reveal their ad spend. They will tell you they have earned $100,000 a month or $3million a year or whatever in a heartbeat, but they will not tell you that it cost them at least a quarter of that in advertising. So just be careful and aware that income like this is not something that happens overnight. You have to start somewhere and it takes time (unless you have just inherited a fortune) to build up a business like this.

So how can you do it?? Where do you start? Well i have started, and if you stick around i will show you exactly how to do it.

Too many people rush into creating adwords campaigns. If you just dive straight in you could be throwing a lot of money down the drain. The testing of a campaign is extremely inmportant.

There are a few things you can do to split test your ads easily using google adwords.

The easiest and fastest way, but not the most in depth is to create two campaigns with the exact keywords and bids. Then all you have to do is sit and watch to see which one performs better, kill off the duds and you’re good to go.

Another way is to go into the campaigns settings and choose to “Rotate” your ads. The default option is to optimise them.  Optimizing your ad rotation is just a way for Google to make the most money from you, so stear clear of it.  Always create two ads for every adgroup you have, and make sure they’re evenly displayed. You will want to do a few tests per adgroup before settling on the winning ad.

As your split testing is going on make sure to setup conversion tracking for your campaigns. If you get an ad group that is not performing well, ie not converting, then kill it. Dont waste any more time or money on it just pause it and you can narrow down what works and what doesnt. Usually if an ad group has no conversions after say the first 200 or so clicks then it’s no good.

If you create awesome ads, you attract awesome buyers, get an awesome click through rate, and a lower cost per click, which is also awesome!
